A 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man died Saturday afternoon when a truck plowed onto a field during a youth soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex in northeast Wichita.

Police said the deceased were both from McPherson, but were not related.

Ten other victims were transported to local hospitals with traumatic injuries, while an 11th person was taken for a medical issue.

The driver of the truck, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, was taken into custody. Police say two girls were in the truck with the woman at the time of the incident. They also said the woman had a child playing soccer at the facility but not on the field where the deadly crash occurred.

Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses said they are working to determine how and why the crash occurred. If you have information that could help in that investigation, you are asked to call WPD Investigations at 316-268-4407, Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or 911.

In a statement Saturday night, Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said she was deeply grateful for the first responders who rushed to the scene to help.

The city says all events at Stryker have been cancelled until further notice following the incident. They add that their thoughts and prayers go to the victims of the tragedy and ask the public to avoid the facility as emergency personnel complete their work there.
