Wichita police are investigating a fatal shooting Thursday evening during youth football games at Dr. Glen Dey Park, at 2801 N. Grove.
Shortly after 7:00 p.m., an off-duty Wichita police detective working secondary employment heard multiple gunshots from another area of the park. The detective ran toward the scene, finding 32-year-old Travon Stewart suffering from gunshot wounds.
The detective called for backup and emergency medical services, then began life-saving measures until EMS arrived. Stewart was hospitalized in extremely critical condition, and later died from his injuries.
Preliminary findings indicate about 250 people were in attendance at the football games. Stewart was at the park selling concessions as a fundraiser for a football team not affiliated with the Wichita Junior Football League.
Homicide detectives believe this was a targeted shooting, and not connected to the youth football games.
Anyone who attended the games or may have information is urged to contact the Wichita Police Department Investigations Section at 316-268-4407.
