It began around 6:20 p.m., at the Aspen Park Apartments, in the 8400 block of W Central. Battalion Chief Jose Ocadiz says investigators determined that a resident had been smoking on a balcony and carelessly discarded the cigarette which caused the blaze.
After the fire began, flames rolled over a covered balcony and entered the building through the soffit, making its way into the attic space.
A firefighter who was injured, was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. No other injuries were reported.
According to the Red Cross, who is assisting residents displaced by the fire, at least 14 of the 16 units were destroyed in the blaze.
