Kansas is on its way to one of its smallest winter wheat harvests in decades.
The USDA projects the state’s wheat production will be cut nearly in half from last year; Kansas is expected to harvest just 196 million bushels this year, a 44% decrease from 2025.
The shortfall is hitting an industry already under strain -- the American Farm Bureau says Chapter 12 bankruptcies increased for the second year in a row in 2025.
More than 300 farms have filed for bankruptcy, and 11 of those were in Kansas.
Nationally, the USDA projects just under a billion bushels will be harvested, down 29% from 2025.
