Downtown Wichita is set to gain a long-awaited grocery store as part of a larger redevelopment effort aimed at supporting the area's growing residential population.

Movement Musick, the nonprofit organization behind a proposed downtown music hub announced earlier this year, announced plans to build a 30,000-square-foot Price Chopper grocery store. The project is being developed in partnership with the Queen family of Kansas City, which helped establish the Price Chopper brand.

Leaders with Movement Musick said the grocery store is a key piece of downtown's continued growth, providing residents with a convenient place to shop for everyday necessities while complementing the planned music venue.

The exact location has not been revealed, but organizers said the grocery store will be built within two blocks of the future music hub.

Many residents welcomed the announcement, saying a grocery store within walking distance would make downtown a more attractive place to live and help strengthen the community. Others expressed concerns about potential theft and security challenges.

Movement Musick has not announced a construction timeline for either the grocery store or the music hub.
