Wichita City Council will discuss police "retention" bonuses

Brandon Whipple
KNSS NEWS

At Tuesday's meeting the Wichita City Council will discuss one-time, $5,000 retention bonuses for each police officer. Mayor Brandon Whipple tells KNSS News the intention is good, but the idea may need some tweaking. Whipple says instead of "retention" bonuses, they seem more "thank you" bonuses. He says that may cause problems with other city workers who say "what about us?"

Wichita's new temporary homeless shelter is open at 21st and Grove. The facility has bed space for 250 and will serve three free meals a day. Mayor Whipple says last year more than 40 people died in Wichita because of the harsh winter weather.

Whipple commented during Mondays with the Mayor on the Steve and Ted in the Morning Show on KNSS.
