Sedgwick County planners and community members met Thursday, discussing proposed regulations for commercial data centers; local leaders are working to establish permanent zoning rules before a temporary development pause expires.
Sedgwick County paused data center development earlier this year, allowing officials time to evaluate the industry’s footprint, and draft standards protecting local resources. On Thursday, planners presented the first public draft of the regulatory framework.
Officials spent more than two hours reading and discussing the initial draft before opening the floor to public comment.
Mike Betzen, a Sedgwick County resident, spoke during the hearing, emphasizing that neighbors are not trying to block technological growth entirely, but rather want safeguards against massive developments.
Planning officials said the proposed guidelines remain fluid and will incorporate additional feedback from residents and local leaders.
The planning committee is scheduled to reconvene in two weeks to continue reviewing revisions.
