One person died after a car crash involving multiple vehicles on Highway K-96 in the northeast part of Wichita.
The crash happened at about 4:30 Monday afternoon in the east-bound lanes of K-96, west of the Greenwich exit.
A Kia Optima was west-bound on K-96, driven by a 42-year-old man from Wichita, changing lanes, driving partially into the merging lane from the Greenwich on-ramp. The driver then over-corrected to the left, hitting a Toyota Tacoma, sending both vehicles into the median, and into the east-bound lanes of on-coming traffic.
The Toyota then hit a Chevy Volt going east-bound, driven by an 18-year-old woman from Wichita, and the next vehicle going east-bound, a Ram 1500, driven by a 32-year-old man from Augusta, T-boned the passenger side of the Tacoma.
That collision critically injured the driver of the Toyota, 53-year-old Robert Galloway of Wichita; within two hours, he was declared deceased. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Afternoon-commute traffic on the east-bound roadway came to a standstill, and drivers had to avoid that part of the highway as emergency crews responded.
