The city of Wichita will apply for a federal grant to help alleviate flooding near the downtown area.

The $47.7 million project would reconstruct storm sewers and streets near Murdock and St. Francis, to help address flooding near the Via Christi at St. Francis campus.

The federal grant is worth $38.2 million, with a local match of $9.5 million. The city has until February 24 to apply and will be notified this coming fall if they were successful. If not, the city can reapply in 2026.

City leaders say community support can help in winning grants like these. A similar grant helped fund the North Junction project, but the city wasn't awarded funding until the third attempt.
