The City of Wichita says air quality is unhealthy today.

Smoke from hundreds of out-of-control Canadian wildfires and other fires in the United States is being driven into the area, worsening air quality for most of Kansas, including Wichita.

On Wednesday morning, the air quality index for Wichita was 166 AQI, which is rated "unhealthy."

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, youngsters, and teengers are urged to take steps to reduce their exposure to the air today.

In the spring, Wichita was ranked the worst city for dealing with allergies.

The city is #1 for tree, grass, and weed pollen count, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Wildfires burning across the United States and Canada have impacted air quality, making allergy concerns worse.

City officials said the air quality index was particularly high, making it “very unhealthy” for some members of the general public and sensitive groups.
