The Wichita Police Department activated a gunshot detection system on Friday, called Raven.
It uses acoustic sensors to detect and pinpoint gunfire in real time. The system has been in testing locally since 2022, with Police reporting improved accuracy. They said up to 83% of gunfire incidents in pilot areas were never reported through traditional channels.
The system is a key part of WPD’s broader effort to improve community safety, by responding faster and efficiently.
Deployment sites were selected by using data showing the highest rates of gun-related crime.
WPD began community outreach by hosting town halls in every City Council district. Community feedback led to several policy changes on how Raven is used.
