Wichita Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy on a charge of 2nd-degree murder, stemming from a shooting that fatally injured Trenjvious Hutton, 14, of Wichita.
Officers responded to a shooting at Towne East Mall around 5:30 Friday afternoon. When they arrived, they found the victim who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say Hutton and the individuals were in a physical altercation, which stemmed from an ongoing dispute. Police say the suspect and victim knew each other. The suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots striking Hutton, then fled on foot.
Officers were able to get a description of the suspect from eyewitnesses. Officers quickly located the suspect in the area and arrested him. A 17-year-old boy who was with the suspect was detained, questioned, and released. Officers say they recovered two handguns during the investigation.
Chief Lem Moore said "any death stemming from a shooting is traumatic for our community, especially when it involves one of our youths at a very busy shopping area. Wichita Police will be proactively providing extra resources at this shopping area to ensure safety of patrons and employees.”
The investigation is ongoing, and the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office.
