Changes are being made to Wichita Police Department policy after a man accused of causing a crash that killed a boy, 14, walked away after being taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The suspect, Gauge Brasher, 19, was initially arrested but later released to receive medical care.  He walked away from the hospital a short time later.  His actions led to a city-wide man-hunt, before he was found and arrested two days later.

Officials said they are working to remain transparent, and by updating the department policy involving suspects who need hospital treatment, it would put more oversight on people suspected of specific crimes.

There will also be a mandatory review of all hospital guard decisions by the Field Services and Investigations Division commanders by 9:00 a.m. the following morning.

It also includes a requirement that suspects in felony D.U.I. cases be booked into jail when probable cause exists and a blood draw has been completed.
