A shooting suspect remains on the loose after a roughly 12-hour standoff in south Wichita Thursday.

Officers were called around 4:30 a.m. and found a 49-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the groin. Police say the shooting occurred in the 1500 block of S. Pattie, near Harry and Southeast Boulevard.

A woman told officers that her roommate, identified as 29-year-old Wesley Roberts, was acting strangely. She ultimately feared for her safety after Roberts took her phone and threw it to the ground.

She called the 49-year-old man to come speak with Roberts. After words were exchanged, the shooting occurred.

Officers arrived, established a perimeter and asked Roberts to surrender peacefully. When that was unsuccessful, SWAT and negotiators were activated. Several attempts to communicate with the suspect failed. Officers sent several devices into the home but came up empty.

Roberts is believed to have been armed with a long gun during the incident and should be considered armed at this time. Police remind residents to not approach or attempt to contact him.
