The City of Wichita has signed a certificate of occupancy for the new $573 million water treatment plant, and will now take over operation of the facility.
City officials are undergoing training on operation and maintenance, ensuring water operations may transition fully from the current water treatment plant, which has been in operation in Wichita for nearly 90 years.
The City has allotted six months for this training period, and many staff-members were able to begin training during the delay of the project because of the clarifier design and mechanical challenges.
Full clarifier repairs and subsequent successful testing of the plant by Wichita Water Partners allowed the City to progress to this next phase of bringing the new water treatment plant fully online.
This next phase does not signify final delivery of the project from Wichita Water Partners; the new plant is anticipated to be brought fully online the second quarter of 2027. This is the most expensive public-works project in Wichita's history.
