With several inches of snow and an underlying layer of ice already on the ground after last weekend's freezing storm & blizzard, Wichita received another round of snowfall on Thursday afternoon and evening.
Some parts of E. Wichita received more than seven inches of new snow by Thursday night, and six inches were measured near Whitewater in the southern part of Harvey County, to the north of Wichita.
Maize, on the northwest side of the metro area, got more than six inches of new snow. More than five inches were recorded north of Clearwater, on the southwest side of the Wichita area, and in the downtown Wichita area.
The official measurement, taken at Eisenhower Airport, came in at 5.9 inches.
Among the tips from AAA Kansas for dealing with a snowstorm: if your car door or lock is frozen, apply gentle force to push and then pull on the door handle; use a de-icer fluid (kept in your house, not locked in the vehicle) to spray around the door seals and locks to help melt the ice; pour warm water over the car door and lock (not the window glass) to help thaw the ice; or use a match or lighter to heat the end of your key to help it melt the frozen lock mechanism.
