
More details have emerged after a woman pointing a gun was shot by a police officer in E. Wichita.
Police Capt. Jason Stephens says on Wednesday morning, officers were called to the area of the Sky Palace hotel and the Red Roof Inn, west of Kellogg & Rock; he says police have been called to that area more than 400 times during the past two years to investigate underage parties, illegal drugs, burglaries, disturbances, thefts, and domestic violence.
Officers discovered a car in a parking lot which had been stolen the previous day from a business in northwest Wichita near 29th & Tyler.
A 35-year-old woman got some items out of the trunk of that car. Police asked the woman for identification, and Stephens says at that point the woman reached into her purse and pulled out a handgun, pointing it at both officers. One of the officers pulled his handgun, shooting the woman one time in the neck.
The woman was hospitalized in serious condition, as is expected to survive .. Capt. Stephens says upon her release from the hospital, she will be charged with a pair of counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, possession of stolen property, auto theft, and felony possession of a firearm. The gun she had was loaded, and had been reported stolen Monday from a car in the Towne East Square shopping center parking lot.
The woman has a prior felony conviction, and a federal felony warrant.
