A 22-year-old woman told police that her boyfriend, 24-year-old Malik Rodgers, entered her home in the 500 block of south Lulu around 9:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve without her permission. Rodgers punched and injured her, made threats and pointed a handgun at her. The woman also reported another domestic violence incident that occurred on Thursday.

Officers went to the suspect’s apartment in the 2600 block of south Emporia around 1:30 a.m. Christmas Day. They found Rodgers and attempted to arrest him for domestic violence charges. The suspect did not comply with the officers and a physical struggle ensued. Officers then attempted to subdue him with a Taser but Rodgers escaped and barricaded himself inside of a bathroom. When officers forced open the bathroom door, Rodgers pointed a handgun at them and fired multiple shots. One officer was shot in the arm and the other was struck in the leg. The officers left the apartment and were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Wichita SWAT team members and Crisis Negotiators made several attempts to communicate with Rodgers but were unsuccessful. When SWAT team members entered the home, Rodgers was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead.

Wichita Police say Rodgers had previous felony convictions for attempted 2nd-degree murder and aggravated assault and was on parole with the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Police officials added that no officers fired any shots from their weapons during the incident.
