10 most reliable used cars for the money

If you’re in the market for a used vehicle, you’re in luck, as a recent survey has found that some used cars and trucks give you great bang for your buck.

The study comes from iSeeCars, an online automotive website, which analyzed over 700,000 used car sales and odometer readings from over 368 million used cars and found that not every car is worth the price you pay.

The report sought to identify the most price worthy 5- and 10-year-old cars that have the longest remaining lifespan for the lowest prices.

It found that the best 5-year-old used vehicle for the money is the Honda Fit, which sells for an average of $18,336 and lasts for another 11.6 years on average after purchase. The Volkswagen Passat was second on the list, selling for an average of $17,636 and lasting another 9.6 years.

Here’s the full top 10 list:

1. Honda Fit - Selling for an average of $18,336 and lasting 11.6 years

2. Volkswagen Passat - Selling for an average of  $17,636 and lasting 9.6 years

3. Buick Encore - Selling for an average of $16,633 and lasting 8.8 years

Broken down by body type

The study also provided individual lists of the most reliable trucks, SUVs, and passenger cars.

For passenger cars, the Honda Fit again took the top spot.

But, the best-used truck for the money is the Nissan Frontier, which sells for an average of $23,801 but lasts another 9 years after purchase. Other top trucks included the Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, and Honda Ridgeline.

For used SUVs, the top spot was given to the Buick Encore, which sells for $16,633 on average and lasts 8.8 years after purchase.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport was the second-best SUV, followed by the Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Toyota RAV4.

The researchers noted that used SUVs are among the most popular vehicles for consumers, as U.S. car buyers often opt for more space.

“SUVs remain the most popular vehicle category among U.S. car buyers,” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. “With an average price below $25,000 and an average remaining lifespan of 7.6 years (for 5-year-old SUVs), SUV shoppers can save a lot of money and still get plenty of use by buying used instead of new.”
