Two people were killed and 10 more injured when two boats collided off the coast of South Florida.

The collision happened around 10:30 Friday night near Key Biscayne, just south of Miami Beach.

A person involved in the crash notified the Coast Guard that 12 people had gone overboard, the agency said in a statement.

The Coast Guard Station Miami Beach and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene and recovered two bodies from the water.

Meantime, some survivors were rescued by helicopter while others were rescued by crews in boats. The 10 survivors were taken to two different hospitals. At least two were critically injured, authorities said.

“On behalf of the Coast Guard and our partner agencies, we'd like to offer our sincerest condolences to the families and friends who lost their loved ones," Lt. Cmdr. Benjamin Tuxhorn, Coast Guard Sector Miami search and rescue mission coordinator, said in a statement. "The Coast Guard and our local partner agencies quickly responded and exhaustively worked together on this search and rescue case."

Authorities did not indicate what may have led to the collision.

Names of the victims were not released.

The incident remains under investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
