25 years ago Friday was the shocking shooting death of famed Italian designer Gianni Versace.

He turned out to be the final victim of a spree killer whose name at the time became well-known coast-to-coast.

Eight days after Versace was shot down in his mansion on South Miami Beach, police were able to track down Andrew Cunanan.

Cunanan committed suicide inside a house boat docked off the Miami coast.

Three months earlier, Cunanan killed Jeffrey Trail with a hammer, then shot David Madson at a lake near Rush City, Minnesota. Madison's remains were found first, Trail's body was at Madison's apartment wrapped in a rug.

Cunanan also killed real estate developer Lee Miglin in Chicago and cemetery worker William Reese in New Jersey before heading south to Florida.

There were numerous sightings of Cunanan across the country with the California native's photo appearing on national publications.

Cunanan's motive remains unknown. At the time of the murders there was extensive public and press speculation linking the crimes to Cunanan's alleged discovery that he was HIV positive, although an autopsy revealed he was HIV negative.

The murders became a pop culture phenomenon, and has been portrayed in several movies and TV series since 1997.
