According to a new report by Nielsen, a longtime leader in determining what people are watching in their living rooms, Americans spent 2021 streaming content in greater numbers than ever before – an 18% increase over the previous year in terms of average weekly time spent streaming video.

Actual minutes spent streaming was up from 143.2 billion to 169.4 billion for the 12-month period beginning in February 2021.

The dramatic increase was revealed in Nielsen’s inaugural State of Play report on Wednesday. The report also showed, coincidentally, another 18% increase in “all available video content” and a “nearly 20% increase in unique program titles over the past three years.”

There are over 817,000 unique program titles available to Americans across the streaming landscape as of February 2022, up from 646,000 at the end of 2019.

The report also pointed to continued growth in the streaming video industry, with 93% of Americans saying they would at least make no changes to their existing streaming bundles, if not add more.

It did show however that 46% of respondents do feel overwhelmed by the growing number of streaming services available.
