A new poll from the Pew Research Center has found that Americans are divided on whether or not the United States should continue to fund Ukraine in its war against Russia.
The survey found that 48% of Americans say the country has “a responsibility to help Ukraine defend itself from Russia’s invasion.”
However, 49% disagreed with the sentiment that the US had a “responsibility” to fund Ukraine’s war efforts.
The poll comes as the Biden administration announced that it will be sending Ukraine at least $200 million in air defenses and other weapons. The administration also made a $1.5 billion commitment to support the defense of Eastern European countries long-term.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the US will supply Ukraine with F-16 fighter aircraft with air-to-ground munitions, precision-guidance kits, and advanced air-to-air missiles.
As for the survey, Pew found that even with Americans being split on assisting Ukraine, a majority (68%) was “strongly” or “somewhat” approving of continuing “strict economic sanctions on Russia” for its “invasion” of Ukraine.
Biden has continued to advocate for Ukraine, calling on America to continue supporting the country as he said earlier this month that Russia and Vladimir Putin were “failing” in the war against Ukraine.
“Together, we built a global coalition to stand with Ukraine,” Biden said earlier in July. “Make no mistake, Russia is failing in this war. More than two years into Putin’s war of choice, its losses are staggering. More than 350,000 Russian troops dead, wounded. … Many young people have left Russia because they no longer see a future in Russia.”
The survey from Pew was conducted July 1-7 and included responses from 9,424 people. There is a margin of error of 1.3 percentage points.
