Boeing ceremonially launched construction on a significant expansion of its South Carolina manufacturing facility, where the company assembles its 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The enhanced campus is designed to accommodate an increased production target of 10 aircraft monthly by 2026 in response to robust market demand.

The aerospace giant unveiled plans for the Charleston-area expansion in late 2024, committing over $1 billion to infrastructure improvements across its Airport Campus location and a secondary facility. The investment is expected to generate more than 1,000 jobs within the coming five years.

Key elements of the expansion project include:

A new final assembly hall comparable in scale to the existing 1.2-million-square-foot building, featuring production stations, support areas, and administrative offices for airplane manufacturing.

Additional facilities at the Airport Campus, including a parts preparation center, a vertical fin painting building, and expanded Flight Line positions for aircraft testing and delivery preparation.

Expanded capacity at the Interiors Responsibility Center, the facility where interior components for the 787 are manufactured.

The expansion reflects Boeing's strategy to meet growing demand for the fuel-efficient widebody aircraft while strengthening its manufacturing presence in South Carolina.
