It's colder in Chicago today than in Antarctica

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - In midst of arctic air mass, the Chicago area will experience a third straight day of bitter cold, with today the most frigid one yet. In fact, CBS News reported that it is even colder than Antarctica in the city today.

Meteorologist Kylee Miller said January is actually the warmest month in Antarctica, when highs reach the 30s to 50s. While Chicago high temperatures are in the single digits this week, Antarctica is in the balmy 30s.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for most area counties. It’s in effect until 2 p.m. The NWS says the coldest conditions will be for the next several hours, with air temps below zero and wind chills unlikely to get above 20 below zero. It could feel as cold as 28 below zero.

For areas far north and west, like Kane,  Lake and McHenry Counties, there is an Extreme Cold Weather Advisory until noon today. According to the NWS, wind chills will sit at or around 30 below zero for most of the morning, possibly causing frostbite in as quickly as 10 minutes on exposed skins. In this type of cold, the danger of hypothermia also exists.

This afternoon and evening, temperatures will barely reach above zero, the NWS says. This will be the worst of it.

Although wind chills will remain below zero, we’ll gradually begin to warm up overnight.

Wednesday, the NWS says temps will climb into the 20s and that will be replicated for the rest of the work week.

Come the weekend, AccuWeather says we could even see the mid 30s.

With this dangerous cold, the City of Chicago will open warming centers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Other facilities, such as libraries, also serve as warming centers and sometimes have different or longer hours.
