Father of the year!
In a clip that will either make you feel inspired or completely inadequate as a father, this dedicated dad built an entire “Star Wars”-themed Disneyland ride in his garage to please his daughter on her 8th birthday.
Though we’re guessing dad might’ve liked it a little too.
“Back in the fall of 2019 my daughter Indy requested a Disneyland themed party at our house for her birthday in April,” the dad wrote. “We built a couple of attractions for it but due to Covid when her birthday came around we had to shelve everything and postpone the party until 2021.”
The clip starts as his little daughter and a couple friends run in, the daughter yells “Whoa!” and then the dad says, “Welcome to Star Tours! I’m Han Solo, and this is a non-stop flight to the forest moon of Endor!”
And it’s off on an inventive fun run that, if this goes viral, is going to have to make every dad out there really up his birthday party game.
The YouTube clip then turns into a video tour for the viewer too, as the camera pans around the garage/star cruiser, then into the spaceship capsule with the recorded captain robot voice leading you through the experience.
Inside the ship, the dad has affixed a large screen TV where most of the filmed action takes place.
And before you can say, “Oh come on,” the screen splits, showing the kids inside the ship laughing and cheering, and the outside where the ship itself moves with the action -- with the help of two extremely patient and good friends of dad’s, lifting and shifting the ship the whole time. May the force be with their chiropractor!
The footage on the flat screen looks like a mix between swiped actual “Star Wars” movie clips and other sci-fi films. Four-plus minutes follow, full of exciting takeoffs, landings, fighter battles, a lightspeed flight home, and finally some farewell greetings from the robot captain.
The kids exit the ship beaming with huge smiles as a woman dressed as Princess Leia (who must be thinking, “Honey, how about ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’ next year?) greets them.
But wait! Of course Darth Vader comes rumbling out, a light saber battle ensues, as Leia gets the kids safely out the garage door.
Details pop in and out the clip that show the length to which dad invested in the experience. There’s a professionally made logo sign, perfect costuming, and even an R2-D2 robot coming out of the top of the ship. Oh, and of course he included seat belts.
This guy must’ve been out of work during the pandemic, because this took a lot of time to put together.
And after all that, the caption for this parentally epic 10-minute YouTube clip?
“This is a homemade Disneyland Star Tours attraction built for my daughter's Disneyland themed birthday party at our house.”
Wait -- so this is just part of a whole Disneyland-themed party?!
Dad, you’re too modest. And maybe a little too obsessed.
In case the YouTube poster’s name -- “Disneyland at Home for Indy’s Birthday” -- didn’t imply it enough, Disney should look into interviewing this guy about helping out with their next Star Wars attraction.
Hey dads, for your sake we’re hoping this whole birthday extravaganza thing isn’t becoming a trend. Happy Father’s Day!
