A beloved feral cat who roamed the grounds of Disneyland and visited guests at a special dining lounge where he stole their hearts, has died.
Nutmeg -- a long-haired orange cat who patrolled for rodents at the members-only Magic Key Terrace inside Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim -- was one of the park's most well-known felines.
"Nutmeg was one of Disneyland Resort's feral cats, tasked with keeping the rat population down around the parks and ensuring the only rodents guests see are Mickey and Minnie Mouse," according to Disneyland News Today, which shared the news of Nutmeg's death.
Nutmeg was so fond of visiting passholders and cast members at the Magic Key Terrace, bartenders there even created a drink named after him.
"[It's] made with Myers dark rum, Bailey's Irish Cream, Frangelico hazelnut liqueur, and apricot liqueur and selling for $16 as a 'secret menu' drink," according to Disneyland News Today. "The presentation was a beautiful cream color with the ground nutmeg sprinkled on top."
Nutmeg was part of a pack of feral cats, by some estimates as many as 200, who are often evasive during the day but come out at night to hunt for pests in Disneyland and the neighboring California Adventure Park. The cats are cared for by park staff, who provide medical care and feeding stations. The adult cats are spayed and neutered, and in the event any kittens are born at the resort, workers find homes for them, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The cats are an attraction all on their own at the parks -- a dedicated Instagram account to the felines has more than 113,000 followers.
Disney officials have not commented on Nutmeg's death.
