With a shortage of workers one of the factors still hindering retail’s post-pandemic recovery and student loan debt still crippling generations’ worth of American earnings at this point, a number of companies are finding success in luring employees with the prospect of free college tuition.

Last fall Amazon joined a growing list of companies that are offering 100% college tuition reimbursement to hourly American employees.

Walmart, another retail giant, reports it has 89,000 workers in its free tuition program and has graduated 15,000 already. Target launched its own program reimbursing 100% of employees’ college tuition last year as well.

Target also offers up to $10,000 per year towards graduate degree programs.

And it’s not just retail employers who are jumping on the free school bandwagon. Chipotle, Papa John’s and Starbucks are among the food-service corporations also paying for employees’ educations, as well as oil giant BP, pharmaceutical corporation Novartis and entertainment goliath Disney.
