A new film is coming out this week about one of the greatest American boxers of all time, and the two-time Heavyweight Champion of the World can’t help but reminisce.

George Foreman joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Chad Hartman to discuss the new movie, “Big George Foreman,” which is scheduled to hit theaters this Friday.

When it comes to why Foreman, 74, wants to share his story now, he says that it isn’t about himself but what others can gain from his experiences.

“I think the movie is needed right now,” Foreman said. “The George Foreman story is not really about being a boxer. It’s about all of us who start from nowhere, and then all of a sudden … we make it to the top, and how do we stay on top? Finding faith in God.”

While Foreman has discussed his life in articles and books about his success in the world of boxing and beyond, he says that after watching this film, he was “brought to tears” because there is “nothing like a movie.”

Even with years of success, Foreman has parts of his life that he would rather forget that are depicted in the film. But he says that seeing them be included was important, though not easy.

“It was tough. You try to hide it. For years I tried to hide it, ‘Oh, that never happened,’” Foreman said. “But then the movie brings them out, and they reveal them, and it wasn’t easy.”

Chris Davis plays the boxer in the film, and Foreman says he gave everything to be committed to the role.

“At the end of the day, he became George Foreman,” he said. “This guy transformed his life, his body, everything into George Foreman the boxer.”
