Movies can be expensive these days, so if you were waiting for one of the summer’s newest movies to hit streaming before you see it, you’re in luck, as National Cinema Day and its $4 movie tickets have returned.

Sunday marks the second annual National Cinema Day, taking place at more than 3,000 theaters nationwide. To celebrate, theaters are allowing moviegoers to see films for just $4.

According to the National Association of Theatre Owners, the last time the average movie ticket was priced at $4 was in 1989. The average ticket price in 2022 was $10.53.

The summer has had its fair share of blockbusters, with films like the latest Mission Impossible, “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” and more all making a splash at the box office.

The holiday also comes amid a shutdown in Hollywood, as actors and writers remain on strike after contract negotiations failed by their respective deadlines between studios and unions.

Now, theater companies like AMC Entertainment are hoping to receive a much-needed boost in profits with a return of the holiday, as last year it saw more than 8 million people participate and brought in more than $23.8 million at the box office, a 103% jump from the previous day’s earnings.

The Cinema Foundation is behind the initiative, which, it says, has propelled long-term theater attendance.

A report from the non-profit, published earlier this year, found that “nearly 60% of surveyed attendees (said) they returned to the movies more frequently after National Cinema Day.”
