Highway reopens after several vehicles flipped due to possible tornado

Interstate 35E reopened early Tuesday morning on the south side of Waxahachie after a crash involving three semi-trucks closed the road Monday night after a possible tornado passed through.

DPS officials say the crash scene included a "possible fatality" at I-35E and Johnston Road. Several others were transported from the scene to area hospitals.

Southbound traffic on I-35E was being re-routed onto Highway 77.

Storm-chaser video shows a twister moving through Ellis County at the same time that three big rigs were blown over, colliding with numerous cars on the north-bound side near Forreston about eight miles south of Waxahachie.

Some the trailers split open, sprawling their contents across the interstate, everything from produce like cucumbers and green peppers to cases of Nutella.

All three of the truck drivers were hurt and were taken to a hospital in Waxahachie. One of them was listed in serious condition.

The highway reopened around 3am following the cleanup.

Officers searched the Forreston area for those who need assistance. DPS, AMR, and the Red Cross were aiding a search & rescue effort around the incident site.

The National Weather Service will survey damage in the morning.
