This month, cocaine was found in the White House. Earlier this year, the Associated Press reported that a toddler managed to squeeze through the executive mansion’s fence.
After reading about the intruder toddler in April, the “Something Offbeat” team started looking into other security close-shaves at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue – and there have been some interesting ones.
Gregg Stebben, author of “White House Confidential: The Little Book of Weird Presidential History”, joined the show to help us learn more.
“You know, in the early days, what would happen is a president was elected and all these people would line up at the White House and stand in line to go address the president – and ask for a job,” he explained. “You have to remember... it’s the people’s house. It’s still our house. It’s just that we have to protect the person inside of it, which has created all this need for security.”
From barefoot intruders to cars crashing into the White House fence, we’ll also cover some of the weirdest breach stories at the mansion.
Each week, “Something Offbeat” takes a deeper look at an unusual headline. If you have suggestions for stories the podcast should cover, send them to us at somethingoffbeat@audacy.com.
