Jerry Douglas, ‘The Young and the Restless’ star, dies at 88

Veteran actor Jerry Douglas has passed away.

He was best known for portraying the character John Abbott for decades on the soap opera "The Young and the Restless."

He was 88. Douglas, who was born on November 12, 1932, passed away just a few days shy of his 89 birthday.

However, he got to celebrate the birthday a month early with his closest family members and former “Young & Restless” co-stars.

TMZ reported the news on Wednesday night; His family confirmed his passing on Tuesday.

No cause of death has been revealed, but the outlet notes that he died after a brief illness.

Douglas made his debut in the CBS soap opera in 1981 appearing in roughly 900 episodes spanning 35 years before his character was killed off in 2016. He was the third actor to step into the role of Abbott, the Jabot Cosmetics tycoon.

His final on-screen role was in a 2016 short film called “The Final Show.”

Throughout his career, he appeared on many classic TV shows such as “Barnaby Jones,” “Melrose Place,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Quincy M.E.,” and “The Incredible Hulk.

His big-screen credits include "JFK, "Good Guys Wear Black," "Avalanche," "Mommie Dearest," "Head Over Spurs in Love" and "The Godson."

Douglas was born Gerald Rubenstein in Boston, Massachusetts.

Per his IMDB bio, he enrolled in Brandeis University in hopes of pursuing a law degree in economics, but eventually transitioned into acting.

He is survived by his longtime wife Kym Douglas and their son Hunter Douglas. He also shared two children, Jod and Avra Douglas, from a previous marriage with Arlene Martel.
