SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Friends are great. They can help you relax, have fun, and even get you through hard times. But, have you ever felt like it gets harder to maintain friendships as you age?
This week on “It’s Generational,” our multigenerational panel of guests shares their different perspectives on friendships and how they are impacted by culture, politics, lifestyle and more.

For this season of “It’s Generational” baby boomer journalist Dorothy Tucker, President of the National Association of Black Journalists; GenX journalist Hugo Balta, former President of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists; millennial comedian and writer Aparna Nancherla, author of the upcoming book Unreliable Narrator: Me, Myself and Impostor Syndrome and Kim Saira, a GenZ content creator focused on inner healing and community care, make up our panel.
“I made a decision where I think this was 2021,” said Saira of how her relationships changed during the pandemic. “I wrote long paragraph letters to every single one of the people that I was friends with that I told I was cutting them off, basically.”
“I don’t know if it’s like this stage of life. I mean, but I’ve found like maintaining friendships can be really challenging,” said Nancherla and our millennial production team totally knows what she means.
“I’ve got three or four or five really close friends and they just all happened to be in New York or on the East Coast…” said Tucker. “We just... do the old fashioned get on the phone,” she said of how they maintain their friendship.
On keeping up a relationship with a best friend who has way different political views, Balta explained that “it really gives me a different point of view that clearly I don't have.”
Dr. Frederick Smith, a psychologist with Thriveworks, joined the show this week to explore friendships – from how we make them to why we need them, how to keep them and when to cut them off.
“Friendships can have a major impact on our health or our well-being,” he said. “Because. when you have friends, you’re less likely to experience isolation, you’re less likely to experience loneliness.”
