Faith finds us at the strangest times, and for one Georgia man, it allegedly came after he broke into a Florida church, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage, and then decided to baptize himself in the sanctuary pool.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office shared that officers responded to a burglary call at the Emerald Beach Church of God in Panama City Beach last Friday.
When officers arrived at the church, they said they discovered Derek Porter had used a cinder block to break through a window and enter the church.
Cops were initially called by a female church employee in the building when Porter broke in but she said she quickly fled when she heard the glass breaking.
Once inside, Porter went crazy, wreaking havoc on the inside of the holy building, according to police.
“While inside, Porter caused approximately $8,000 worth of damage to the church,” police said in a statement. “Porter then loaded several electronics including a television and a computer into his truck along with the church’s money bag.”
Porter was out on bond for burglary in Georgia at the time of the incident, and police say he was found with methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia when he was arrested in Florida.
Police also said that Porter claimed he “could not remember what happened during various moments inside the church.”
“He did remember however baptizing himself in the church’s baptistry pool. Porter claims ‘something’ was holding his head down under the water while in the pool,” police said.
Porter was charged with burglary of an occupied structure, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal mischief.
