What could cause a person to jump out of a moving aircraft and on to one of its wings?
After opening the door to a passenger flight from Cali, Columbia to Miami, Fla., Wednesday night, 33-year-old Christian Segura opened an emergency door and jumped on to a wing of the American Airlines plane, according to Local 10 News. He told police that he was not feeling well and was transported to the Jackson Memorial Hospital when paramedics determined he had high blood pressure.
According to police, Segura made his way on to the wing of American Airlines flight 920 at around 7:16 p.m. Wednesday night as the aircraft was reaching the terminal at Miami International Airport. When officers arrived at the scene, the American citizen jumped off the wing and was taken into custody.
He was initially detained by agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and was eventually transferred into the custody of the Miami-Dade Police Department.
As of Thursday morning, Segura was still in the hospital, according to Local 10. He will be booked into jail once he is released, the outlet said.
Despite the unusual incident, there were no delays for the other passengers, who were able to get off the plane without any issues.
“While customers were exiting the plane at the gate, a passenger opened the over-wing emergency exit and jumped onto the ramp. The customer was immediately detained by law enforcement officials. All other customers deplaned normally,” said an American Airlines statement about the event, according to Local 10. “We thank our team members for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”
