Massive Texas hailstone sets record

Everything's bigger in Texas, including our hailstones...so much so that one that fell near San Antonio back in April got its own classification.

Normally, you hear meteorologists refer to their size as dime-size to ping-pong ball, golf balls and baseballs to grapefruits. But one that fell recently they're calling it "unheard of."

A report released by the National Center for Environmental Information says a hailstone in Hondo measured nearly 6.5 inches in diameter and weighed a whopping 1.26 pounds! The largest on record. And scientists are saying it might have actually been bigger than that, but the people who collected it didn't seal it in a container before putting it in the freezer.

Just as a reference, for hail to be considered "severe," it has to be larger than three-quarters of an inch in diameter.

Another hailstone NOAA described as "gargantuan" was discovered the same day about a half a mile away. Unfortunately, we don't know its actual size because it was used to make margaritas.
