It seems like everyone in Hollywood is ready for their close up, even wild animals. For example, a smiling bear that was recently photographed near Pasadena, Calif.
According to the Los Angeles Times, wildlife photographer Johanna Turner captured the rare black bear image with a trail cam in late April. She caught it remotely, explaining that it would be dangerous for humans to get close enough for the snap.
However, nature and urban life seem to be crossing paths more and more lately. Sam Benson Smith, digital managing editor at Audacy station KNX in Los Angeles, joined the “Something Offbeat” podcast to talk about it.
In particular, he gave the show a peek into a literal example of wildlife and humans crossing paths – a nature crossing project over the freeway that is currently underway.
“They’ve been putting up basically these giant concrete bollards, and then they’ll get this abutment in the middle and then they’re going to have… the massive bridge itself… and then from there, it’s not just the bridge – you’ve got to put soil in place. They’re going to have native fungi in place, acoustic protection, light protection, so that basically the animals aren’t even aware they’re going over… one of California’s biggest freeways.”
Each week, “Something Offbeat” takes a deeper look at an unusual headline. If you have suggestions for stories the podcast should cover, send them to us at somethingoffbeat@audacy.com.
