The ex-husband of a missing Mid-city Los Angeles mother who’s been missing for more than two weeks said someone found her lost dog wandering an apartment building, miles away from where she lived.
Investigators said witnesses last saw 39-year-old Heidi Planck on Oct. 17. After leaving her home in the Reynier Village neighborhood near Pico and Robertson with her dog, Planck joined her husband to watch their 10-year-old son play football near Gardendale Street in Downey. The LAPD released a surveillance video that shows Planck leaving her residence.

Jim Wayne, Planck’s former husband, said he last saw her as she left the game at halftime, telling NBC’s “Dateline” she seemed “edgy” and “antsy,” though he didn’t know why. He said they generally communicated daily but that he did not hear from Planck after that.
“All I know is that was the last time I saw her or talked to her,” Wayne said.
He reported Heidi missing after she never arrived to pick up their son in Westwood as expected three days later on Oct. 20.
Her ex-husband said a woman found Planck’s dog Seven wandering the 28th floor of a downtown Los Angeles highrise and began leaving messages on her phone the night of Oct. 17. A couple who lived in that building reportedly cared for the dog for nearly a week after being unable to contact the owners connected to his microchip.
Managers of the DTLA apartment building, which boasts secure floors and a labyrinth-like floorplan, have not cooperated with investigators’ requests to search the highrise without a warrant, KCBS reported.
Wayne said no one could tell him how the dog got to the 28th floor or whether his ex-wife was familiar with any of the building’s residents.
Police did, however, obtain a search warrant for Planck’s home. Officers stormed her home Friday evening with guns drawn, concerned they might have been entering a possible crime scene. Nearly a dozen federal agents and homicide detectives photographed the house and collected evidence late into the night, KCAL said.
Planck worked as a controller for an investment firm, Camden Capital Partners, according to her LinkedIn. The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the company in a $43 million Native American tribal bond fraud scheme. Police can’t say if her disappearance is realted to the case.
Planck’s mother said she had expected Heidi to visit her in Buffalo for Thanksgiving, the DailyMail reported.
Planck’s son celebrates his 11th birthday in a few days and wishes for nothing more than to “spend his birthday with” his mom, Wayne told Dateline.
“He was doing OK until he saw a photo of them the other day — and then he just broke down. He told me that he just wanted one more time to talk to her. That hurt. That was really painful,” he said in the NBC interview.
“We’re just hoping for a miracle and that she comes home,” he exclaimed.
