Who takes Valentine’s Day seriously in the U.S.? The answer may surprise you.
This month, Bookies.com revealed data that indicates West Virginia and New Jersey as the most romantic states in the nation – and Illinois ranked in the top 10. Were those your guesses?
According to Bookies.com, a member of the Associated Press Sports Editors organization, Google Trends data from 2017 to 2022 was used to compile the list.
“For each year, we broke down the raw search data for each state for the term: Valentine’s Day. We only looked at data in the 30 days prior to Valentine’s Day each year,” said the outlet. “All states were assigned a numerical value from 1-100 depending on their search traffic data for each individual year (with the most searches getting a higher number and the least searches a lower number).”
Here are the top 10 most romantic states in the U.S., based on the data:
1. West Virginia
2. New Jersey
3. Delaware
4. Pennsylvania
5. New York
6. Texas
7. Illinois
8. Rhode Island
9. California
10. New Mexico
“Something’s in the water in West Virginia,” said Bookies.com. “Not only was this state our highest ranked when averaging out the last six years of data, it ranked first each year. Seriously.”
Although people may not immediately associate West Virginia – which is located in the Appalachian Mountains – with romance it is associated with at least one beloved song. John Denver’s Billboard hit “Take Me Home, Country Roads” has dreamy depictions of the nature-filled state.
Wisconsin, Colorado, Minnesota, Washington and Oregon were at the bottom of the Bookies.com list. In recent years, romance ratings in Arkansas and Texas – two states that have been in the top 10 over the past six years – have dropped.
Bookies.com noted that many of the high-ranking states are on the East Coast, and another may soon break into the top 10.
“Connecticut wasn’t in the top-10 between 2017 and 2020 but exploded into that range each of the last two years,” the outlet said.
