A female black bear and her two cubs were rescued from a storm drain in Simbsbury, a town outside of Hartford, Conn., says the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Conservation.
FOX 61 said that people could hear the bears crying in the drain through he night before they were rescued Wednesday evening. Greenwich Times reported that police originally thought the trio were using the drain as a passageway to travel. However, they quickly realized the bears needed help.
Simsbury police, Environmental police, and town crews even used a 10-foot log to help the bears out, according to the Connecticut Insider.
"After a little bit of time and some 'cub calling' from our bear biologist, the mom and her 2 cubs exited the drain and took off looking for a tree to hang out in!" said the Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police in a Facebook post.
According to the North American Bear Center, black bears can be found in 40 of the 50 states and their "range is continuous throughout New England." Although the bears had been eliminated from Connecticut in the 1800s, they have since made a comeback due to reforestation replacing abandoned farms, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection explained.
