The Twitter landscape appears to be changing once more, as the company’s CEO Elon Musk shared that the site’s “For You” tab will soon only recommend people who pay for the Twitter Blue subscription service.
“Starting April 15th, only verified accounts will be eligible to be in For You recommendations,” he tweeted on Monday. “The is the only realistic way to address advanced AI bot swarms taking over. It is otherwise a hopeless losing battle. Voting in polls will require verification for same reason.”
However, Musk clarified on Tuesday that this is only for when accounts are recommended on the for you tab of the site.
“Forgot to mention that accounts you follow directly will also be in For You, since you have explicitly asked for them,” Musk tweeted.
Musk has continued to implement new changes on the social media platform since he completed his acquisition of the company at the end of last year. Among the changes are several that have been walked back and many that have stuck, including paid verification, and two main pages, one that shows what Twitter curates for you and a chronological feed from those you follow.
By only recommending accounts that are Twitter Blue subscribers, Musk is helping push content from those who are paying to be on the app, which may affect how some people build their followings.
Voting in polls may not have the same effect, but it might play a part in future decisions for Twitter, as Musk often runs polls on a variety of topics, from asking how he should implement a change to the site to whether or not he should sell shares of his companies.
Musk has been working to fight the growing number of bot accounts on his site since before he took over as CEO. Though, he noted this week while announcing the changes that “it’s ok to have verified bot accounts if they follow terms of service & don’t impersonate a human.”
