South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) shared her thoughts on those facing Jan. 6 charges this weekend, noting that she doesn’t think a “blanket” pardon should be issued, instead calling for pardons on a case-by-case basis.
The remarks from Noem came while she appeared on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday. During her appearance, she was asked about potential pardons and said, “Each of those situations needs to be looked at separately.”
“What I have been very clear about is that we don’t want to see another Jan. 6 again. Nobody in this country wants to see another day like that again,” she said.
Noem went on to say that she thinks Trump will do the right thing should he get back into office this November.
“And I believe that Donald Trump, when he comes back to the White House and is in charge of this country, we’re going to have incredible opportunities to show that people in this country will be safer, that we’ll have law and order back in our streets,” she added.
Trump has mentioned the possibility of pardons before, saying in March that one of his first actions if reelected would be freeing people imprisoned for participating in the riot at the Capitol. He even went as far as to refer to those found guilty as “hostages.”
However, when it comes to what Noem thinks, she said that Trump would issue pardons “based on his prerogative and his decision when he looks at those cases.”
“Each of those individuals needs to be looked at separately, as far as what their role was and what was happening in that situation,” she said.
