Authorities in Hurst, Texas, are still searching for a suspect who shot and killed a 37-year-old woman after her husband “flipped the bird” while driving.

“She was a passenger in the car when I flipped off a driver who put us in danger. She always hated when I did that, and I did it anyways,” said her husband, Zane Jones, in a Facebook post cited by Law & Crime.

In 2019, an appeals court ruled that a raised middle finger is a protected form of free speech, per the New York Times.

According to the Hurst Police Department, Jones and his wife – identified as Poala Nunez Linares – were involved in a road rage incident while driving their maroon 2017 KIA mini-van northbound on East Loop 820 at around 9:18 p.m. Monday. Officers arrived to the scene at the 1400 block of West Hurst Boulevard.

“The driver shot into our car and struck my beautiful wife, who had nothing to do with anything,” Jones wrote. “She was the most special person I’ve ever known, and I can’t understand why it happened. She was my other half and I’ll love her until the day I die. If anyone has ANY information, I’m begging you to come forward. It’s the worst night of my life and it was the last night of hers.”

First responders found Nunez Linares with a gunshot wound to the head. She was transported to JPS Hospital by Hurst Fire Department medics, where she was later pronounced deceased.

Police said that the suspect fired several shots at the couple’s vehicle. They were in a small, dark-colored older model car.

“Aggressive driving has increasingly become a major cause of concern for many road users,” according to AAA, which offers tips for how to deal with road rage situations.

Hurst police have also asked the public to help identify Nunez Linares’ killer.

“Anyone with information regarding this incident, please contact Detective C. Jackson at 817-788-7179 or contact Crime Stoppers at 817-469-8477 or 469tips.com,” said police.
