Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and his family had a scare this week when the politician’s daughter was rushed to the hospital, according to multiple reports.

“This is a family matter, and thankfully their daughter is okay,” said a representative for Cruz. “There were no serious injuries. The family requests that the media respect their daughter’s privacy at this time.”

This statement was provided to local outlet KHOU and the Daily Beast.

According to KHOU, police were called to the Cruz home in Houston Tuesday evening. Unnamed sources told the outlet that they were responding to a “self-inflicted cutting call.”

“Mental health challenges in children, adolescents, and young adults are real and widespread,” said U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy last year when he announced an advisory on a youth mental health crisis in the nation. He said that impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are just one of the factors putting stress on young people in the U.S.

At the time of the alleged incident, Cruz was in Washington D.C., KHOU said. Per the Daily Beast, the subject of the alleged self-inflicted wounds was a 14-year-old girl.

“It’s unclear who the girl was—though Cruz does have two daughters: Catherine, 11, and Caroline, 14,” said the outlet.

Cruz met his wife, Heidi Nelson, while working for former President George W. Bush’s campaign.

“Ted, his wife Heidi, their two daughters Caroline and Catherine, and his entire family have been blessed to live the American Dream,” said the senator’s website.

A video posted to a TikTok account linked to Caroline Cruz by celebrity news site Just Jared and the Daily Mail appears to address the incident.

“I would prefer if y’all wouldn’t make bold statements about what this is when you truly have no idea what is going on,” said the person in the video.
