With electric vehicles becoming increasingly common throughout the country, several retailers and restaurants are looking to attract drivers and customers by adding new charging stations in their parking lots.
Among those is the sandwich shop Subway, which announced on Tuesday that it would be adding electric vehicle charging stations to select restaurants in the US.
The move from Subway is a part of the company’s “Subway Oasis” plan, which will have “charging canopies with multiple ports, picnic tables, Wi-Fi, restrooms, green space and even playgrounds” added to select restaurants.
For some newly built or recently remodeled restaurants, Subway is planning on rolling out smaller charging stations as it partners with the tech companies GenZ EV Solutions and RED E Charging on the project.
Mike Kappitt, the Chief Operating and Insights Officer at Subway, shared in the company’s press release that the restaurant chain wants to change its customers’ experiences while also fighting climate change.
“We’re constantly exploring new ways to innovate and exceed our guests’ expectations for a high-quality, convenient experience,” Kappitt said. “Our partnership with GenZ EV Solutions is a win for our guests, our franchisees, and our planet, creating a dedicated space for drivers to charge their vehicle while enjoying their favorite Subway sandwich.”
The company has yet to share which lucky location is going to be the first Subway Oasis, but it is expected to make the announcement soon.
It was also not disclosed in the release if the company will charge drivers to charge their vehicles.
Others to join the electric vehicle hype train include Taco Bell, which shared with USA Today its plans to build charging stations at select locations, as well as retailers Target and Walmart, which look to do the same.
