Flying can be stressful, and while most of the time, travelers get on their flights with no issue, passengers can sometimes get bumped, leaving them in a nightmare scenario. To avoid a headache, know before you go: These are the airlines that bump passengers the most.

While it may be aggravating or even ruin a trip, airlines are completely within their rights to overbook their flights, according to the Department of Transportation. With overbooking comes the dreaded call for passengers to stay behind when everyone who bought a ticket shows up

Airlines always ask volunteers to give up their seats before they select someone to get dropped from their flight, and the DOT tracks how many passengers are denied boarding due to oversold flights.

In the most recent Air Travel Consumer Report, the DOT found the leader in bumping passengers from their flights was Frontier Airlines.

According to the data in the report, there were more than 2,440 Frontier passengers involuntarily bumped from their flights between January and March of this year, meaning four in every 10,000 passengers were bumped from their planes.

That number is large compared to the other nine airlines in the report, as no other rate surpassed .50 per 10,000. However, the report also noted that Frontier was among the carriers that deplaned the fewest passengers during the first part of the year.

The second airline to bump the most passengers this year was American Airlines, as it kicked 2,070 passengers off flights between January and March.

However, the percentages are drastically different depending on the size of the airline as American Airlines serviced more than 44 million passengers, while Frontier only serviced 6.5 million passengers during the three-month stretch.

Behind American and Frontier, the airlines with the most bumped passengers were Southwest Airlines (610), Spirit Airlines (444), Alaska Airlines (66), and United Airlines (32).

Three airlines didn’t bump any passengers from their flights during the period examined: Delta, Hawaiian, and Allegiant.
