A new poll shows former President Donald Trump ahead of President Joe Biden in five out of six key battleground states.
The poll from The New York Times and Siena College shows Trump ahead of Biden in in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
The only swing state Biden is leading Trump is Wisconsin.
The breakdown of the polls is as follows:
• Nevada -- Trump +11
Trump 52%, Biden 41%
• Georgia -- Trump +6
Trump 49%, Biden 43%
• Arizona -- Trump +5
Trump 49%, Biden 44%
• Michigan -- Trump +5
Trump 48%, Biden 43%
• Pennsylvania -- Trump +4
Trump 48%, Biden 44%
• Wisconsin -- Biden +2
Trump 45%, Biden 47%
Biden defeated Trump to win all six battleground states during the 2020 election.
While a 2024 head-to-head matchup remains theoretical, Trump overwhelmingly remains the Republican front-runner.
"If Trump was not the Republican nominee for president, voters in the six states say they support the 'generic' Republican over President Joe Biden by a 52-36% margin. The results were consistent across the states as the 'Republican' leads Biden by between 14 and 18 points in each," Dr. Don Levy, Director, Siena College Research Institute, said in a statement.
The poll shows Biden's age is likely concerning to voters, with 71% saying he is "just too old to be an effective president." Only 39% said the same for Trump, 77, who is nearly four years younger than Biden, soon to be 81. If reelected, Biden would be 86 at the end of his second term.
Additionally, the survey shows 62% don't think Biden has the "mental sharpness to be an effective president." On the other hand, 52% of those polled say Trump does have the mental sharpness.
