Former President Donald Trump received mixed reactions on Saturday while speaking at a rival party’s convention, telling them their only chance was to elect him as their nominee or join his base.
The remarks from Trump came while he spoke at the Libertarian National Convention on Saturday in Washington, D.C., where he urged the Librarians to “combine with us.”
“The fact is we should not be fighting each other. If Joe Biden gets back in, there will be no more liberty for anyone in our country. Combine with us in a partnership, we’re asking that of the libertarians. We must work together. Combine with us. You have to combine with us,” Trump said.
Trump’s comments were mixed with boos and cheers as the crowd was filled with Libertarians and pro-Trump attendees.
The former president appeared before the crowd, saying he wanted to “extend a hand of friendship” to the party, because together, they could “make a big difference.”
“I’m asking for the libertarian party’s endorsement, or at least lots of your votes,” Trump said, gaining boos and “we want Trump” chants.
However, Trump then went on to take a shot at the party after observing the crowd’s reaction to his proposal.
“Maybe you don’t want to win … Keep getting your three percent every four years,” Trump said.
Still, Trump continued to make his plea to the party, vowing to put a Libertarian in his cabinet if he wins in November. He also said he would commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, who is in the midst of serving life in prison for his role in operating a platform for buying and selling illegal narcotics.
Before Trump addressed the crowd, the Biden campaign released a statement, knocking the former president.
“Freedom isn’t free in Trump’s Republican Party, and this weekend will be just one more reminder of that,” Biden-Harris spokesperson Kevin Munoz said in a statement.
