Preparations for a Thanksgiving dinner in Connecticut went wildly awry Thursday afternoon when a family ended up burning down their $4.5 million home.

The wayward attempt at deep-frying a turkey in the garage ignited a blaze that took 16 hours for firefighters to finally extinguish.

Luckily, none of the 25 people inside the 10,000-square-foot home were injured during the incident, but the home was declared uninhabitable following the fire.

“Suppression efforts were hampered by the area being mostly unhydranted, and the one hydrant companies had laid in from, had the supply hose being very soon run over by a car, bursting the line,” the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Company wrote in a post about the blaze on social media.

Tankers from nearby towns were called in to help fight the fire, which eventually completely engulfed the home.

The tragic accident is “stark reminder to all about the dangers of frying turkeys,” the GVFC added in their post about the incident.
